This one will be about my new Acer Aspire 2920-5A1G16Mi notebook only, this is my first notebook anyway, that is why i am so exited about it. Actually, i have my Acer already for about two weeks, but i was so busy moving my data to it, intalling Windows XP SP2 and Ubuntu 7.10, installing all the softwares required and preparing my holiday to Bali
so i was too hectic and no ideas at all what to write.
It is sleek in design, black holographic 3D. The screen is 12′1″, perfect enough for me, not too big nor small, just comfortable for my eyes and the notebook is light enough to carry everywhere. The keyboard is rather small, but i guess it is because i had been using standard PC size keyboard from the very beginning, i often slipped and pushed wrong button while typing. When you open the lid, you will see pale grey color, for some people it looks a bit grim, but for me it is OK. No more questions, from the look, Acer Aspire 2920-5A1G16Mi just great.
Why did i choose Acer Aspire 2920-5A1G16Mi? simply because it has no Vista Installed
i don’t want to pay the operating system that i will not use
Instead, it comes with Linpus Linux, on the website they mention Basic Linux, now i know what Basic Linux is, Basic Linux is a text mode installed Linux
there you go.
Now, this is the part for computer geek would like, the hardware specifications! Actually you can check it at Acer website for the complete list of the hardware.

Webcam : Don’t expect scenic quality results from it, it is enough just to take pictures of your face or videoconferencing, no need to bring your external usb cam anymore. it reminds me of MacBook webcam, not because i see the same quality, but in fact MacBook webcam is in my opinion still the winner.
Mic : It is placed next to the webcam, i tried to record my voice using sound recorder, without need to yell at it, the recording was very clear, no noise at all.
Screen : It is sharp just like what it said.
Keyboard : Nothing special from it, a regular keyboard.
Keyboard Shortcuts : There are five shortcut buttons on the top right of the keyboard for Arcade Deluxe, Wireless LAN,WWW, Email and Bluetooth. At the top left is an Acer button that launches the shortcuts for the various Acer tools called Acer Empowering Technology Framework, i don’t know why, it always gives me an error message saying “The system cannot find the file specified”. Nothing so special about these buttons anyway. There is one shortcut that disappoints me, the play/pause shortcut for multimedia. Using winamp, when i use the play/pause shortcut, it doesn’t actually pause the song, but it play the song from the beginning, so what’s the use of play/pause shortcut then?
Bluetooth : it works perfectly fine. You can easily turn on/off the bluetooth by pressing the button.
Wlan : It works OK.
Ports: The list of ports and connectors is standard, with three USB 2.0 ports, a five-in-one card reader, Gigabit Ethernet, modem, VGA and s-video output. On the front edge of the Aspire there are headphone and microphone jacks along with a volume control wheel.
Speakers : Dolby Home Theater and Virtual Surround Sound, written on the notebook, but i don’t think it’s true
since it’s not loud enough, the sound like coming from a pair of … not cheap speakers, but definitely not the expensive one, can hardly hear the bass.
Graphics : Once i was confused how to higher the allocation of the memory of the graphic card, it said 8MB there when i check through BIOS, that is insane isn’t. But then when i check to Acer store here, the memory allocation of the graphic card is dynamic, the memory allocation is dynamically following the application you are running. Great technology! Don’t you think?
Battery : On the first time i charged it, for 8 hours, the first thing i check was how long the battery could last. It said 3.5 hours. Well, i was expecting something like 6 hours hehehe, but 3.5 hours is enough for me. But then every time i finish recharging, the battery reading level keeps changing, once it showed 2.5 hours, sometimes 3 hours, the last time i checked, it was 4 hours! amazing. I think we need to wait a bit until all the applications in the startup are all loaded, then we will know the actual hours the battery has.

In normal use, i mean not playing heavy computer game or stuff, Acer Aspire 2920-5A1G16Mi is cool enough, this is what i like best.
So, what else? Oh yes, there is one that bothered me a bit, the CD driver. It has so many choices inside, not intuitive and it has no express installation, which will be a great help.
In conclusion, Acer Aspire 2920-5A1G16Mi is good enough for daily work, not the best one, you won’t be amazed with the features, but i am sure it is perfect for people in limited budget.

Relax mate, it comes with the cd driver also
Thank you very much for your info
I need this info because my friend’s notebook (Acer 4315) only comes with Vista driver only.
From your name, I know that you come from Bali…how come you have your holiday in Bali?
well, i live in Yogyakarta
i rarely go home, and every time i visit Bali, it feels like i am having a holiday hehe :p
About Acer 4315 driver, i am not sure about that, but acer 2920 comes with Vista and XP driver
Btw, could you tell me how much that notebook cost you?
Sorry if my english “Kacau” hehehe
Dear Pak Ketut,
I already install the laptop with Windows XP, but I found that the size of my harddisk became only 130 Gb. Is that happen with you too?
I choose “IDE” on BIOS, because I can’t install Windows XP if I choose “AHCI”.
Please advice….thank you.
I bought it on February 26, the price was Rp. 8, 375, 000 and then on March 10, i went back to the computer store to get 1GB memory for the laptop, i saw the price of it went down sharply! Rp. 8, 030, 000! Damn! i was furious! hehe *upss, sorry for the word*
Well, actually, i have already expected that it would happen, but i didn’t expect it to be that soon.
130GB?! you have lost 30GB then, that is big! I am not sure what has happened with yours, but every time i buy a new harddrive, i always reformat it using my one and only bootable Partition Magic 8
and for the laptop I only lost around 10GB, which is still pretty big for me, as based on my experience, it usually somewhere around 4GB.
My advice will be, try to delete all the partitions you have made, then reformat the harddrive again and make some new partitions. I know the process will be time consuming, but i can not think of any other solutions for you
sorry.
Your english is “kacau”? no worry, that is why we are learning
Oh yeah, i use NTFS for all partitions.
Dear Pak Ketut,
I bought it Rp. 8 million…but yesterday, I saw the price at Bhinneka only Rp 7,999,000.
2 days ago, the price at Bhinneka was Rp 8,639,700….600,000 only in 2 days
First, I only install Windows XP…that’s why I have lost my 30 Gb…but after install SP2 and Chipset driver from Acer, my lost space is show as unallocated space
Now, my harddisk space is back hehehe.
Thank you very much for your advice.
WOW! Rp. 600,000 just within 2 days?! Now i am even more furious!!
This what happen when you buy electronics. Don’t regret it
I have an Acer 4315 but have no sound. How to activate internal speaker please? Have tried the function button. Obviously I am doing something wrong or not right enough. Help!
Sorry for the late reply.
try this command first, just to give it a check
Hmm … are you using Linux or Windows?
If Linux is your operating system, which i hope it is Ubuntu 8.04
sudo lspci
Then you check there if your audio device is detected, if it is detected, it means that the problem is its driver, and for that matter, google is the best source.
Please update me OK.
Hello, I am about to buy this model, but there’s only vista installed and I’m going to install linux, you mentioned you have Linpus installed, if I download Linpus, will all hardwares be supported out of the box?
Sadly .. i have to say no guarantee, Linpus version i had on my Acer just the command line version, it is absolutely no use. I tried Mandriva powerpack, Open Suse 10, Centos 5.2, but Ubuntu has been a good one
as always.
With Ubuntu 8.04.1 the camera works using cheese, go try it then. Please update me OK
